My Child's School Says They Can't Diagnose Dyslexia — What Now?

If you've raised concerns about your child's learning and been told by school that they can't diagnose dyslexia, you're not alone. It's one of the most common things parents hear, and whilst it's technically correct, it can feel like a door being closed when you desperately need one to open. This guide explains what it actually means, what schools can and can't do, and most importantly what your options are from here.
Why can't schools diagnose dyslexia?
Schools can identify and support children with learning difficulties, but a formal diagnosis of dyslexia requires a specialist assessment carried out by a qualified assessor holding an Assessment Practising Certificate. Most schools do not employ someone with that qualification, and even those that do may not have the capacity to carry out full diagnostic assessments for every child who needs one.
Does my child actually need a formal diagnosis?
Not always — but often, yes. A formal assessment gives your child a clear explanation for why certain things feel harder than they should. Additionally, it unlocks formal support in school, exam access arrangements at GCSE and A-level, and follows them to university, where Disabled Students' Allowance may be available.
What does a specialist assessment involve?
A specialist assessment is a detailed one-to-one session lasting around two to three hours. It looks at reading, spelling, writing speed, phonological processing, and memory. At the end, you receive a written report with clear recommendations for school, home, and where relevant, exam access arrangements.
What should I do next?
The most reliable route is to search the PATOSS Assessor Link or the British Dyslexia Association directory for a qualified independent assessor in your area. Make sure your chosen assessor holds a current Assessment Practising Certificate.
At Defining Dyslexia, we offer assessments face-to-face across Sheffield and South Yorkshire and across Peterborough and Cambridgeshire, with remote assessments available nationwide. If you'd like to talk through whether an assessment is the right next step, get in touch — we're happy to help.
