Understanding why learning has been difficult can bring relief and provide a clear direction for the future. However, every individual is different, and some may benefit from additional advice, specialist input or targeted intervention following their assessment.
At Defining Dyslexia, we believe in a collaborative approach. We work alongside a network of trusted professionals and specialist services, allowing us to signpost families and adults towards additional support where this may be helpful.

Every individual’s journey is different. Whilst many people only require the recommendations contained within their assessment report, others may benefit from additional specialist advice or support. Where appropriate, we are happy to discuss the options available and signpost you towards trusted professionals and organisations who may be able to help.

🧠 Educational Psychologists
Educational psychologists help to understand how a child’s learning, thinking, behaviour and emotional wellbeing interact within educational settings. In some situations, further assessment by an educational psychologist may help schools and families gain a broader understanding of a child’s needs and support planning.

🗣️ Speech and Language Therapists (SALT)
Speech and language therapists support children and adults experiencing difficulties with speech, language, communication and social interaction. Where communication difficulties appear to be affecting learning, we may suggest discussing whether speech and language therapy would be beneficial.

📚 Specialist Tuition
A specialist teacher or dyslexia tutor can provide targeted teaching designed around an individual’s learning profile. Following an assessment, structured intervention can help develop reading, spelling, writing, organisation and study skills while building confidence.

🤲 Occupational Therapists (OT)
Occupational therapists help individuals develop the skills needed for everyday activities, including handwriting, motor coordination, sensory processing and organisation. If coordination or sensory differences are affecting learning or daily life, occupational therapy may provide valuable support.

🏫 SEND Consultants and Education Professionals
Navigating the SEND system can sometimes feel overwhelming. Independent SEND consultants and education professionals can provide guidance on school support, reasonable adjustments, EHCP processes and ensuring recommendations are implemented effectively.

🎓 University Disability Support Services
Universities offer a wide range of support for students with specific learning difficulties. Disability support teams can help arrange reasonable adjustments, discuss academic support and explain the assistance available throughout a student’s course. Following an assessment, we may recommend contacting your university’s disability support service to ensure appropriate support is put in place as early as possible.

💻 Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) Needs Assessments
If you are eligible for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), a needs assessment helps identify the practical support, specialist equipment and software that may assist you during your studies. This is separate from your diagnostic assessment and focuses on identifying the adjustments that will help you study more effectively.
Support may include:

- 📚 One-to-one specialist study skills support
- 📝 Training to use assistive technology
- 🎤 Recording equipment where appropriate

Technology can make a significant difference to reading, writing, organisation and independent learning. Depending on an individual’s needs, we may recommend exploring software and tools designed to support literacy, planning and study skills.

Many charities and community organisations provide information, parent groups, training, practical advice and ongoing encouragement for families and adults living with specific learning difficulties. They can be an excellent source of support alongside professional services.
